Welcome
Welcome everyone
to our first Newsletter. As a Non Profit Organisation,
Blue Earth Day Inc is an Urban Sustainability Advocacy
focusing on helping change the Urban landscape by
assisting Schools, Councils and Businesses in
implementing sustainable initiatives and education into
their everyday operation.
Our initial
campaign is to implement sustainable school programs
into participating schools. We are very happy to begin
this campaign with Paddington Public School in Sydney.
The program is designed not only to assist Paddington
Public to become sustainable but its aim is to also
educate the children in sustainability. It is also an
opportunity for the parents and the community to come
onboard and support their school and the environment at
a grass roots level, which is exciting – an opportunity
to come together and make a difference in their
community and make a difference. |

You may also now
be aware that our signature event, the Blue Earth
Day Festival, has been rescheduled till later in the year.
The new date for the festival is Saturday 8th
December 2007. The aim of the festival is not only
to showcase the work of the Non Profit Organisation, but
also to bring the focus firmly back on us, the
consumers, by offering alternative sustainable solutions
to the many aspects of our busy urban lifestyles. It
will give those attending the unique opportunity to gain
access to the latest in green technologies, techniques
and ideas and experience them first hand.
Not only featuring
a vast array of sustainable initiatives but the festival
itself will also incorporate these initiatives into
every facet of operating the event, thereby making the
festival fully sustainable.
In the coming
editions of our Newsletters we will bring you
environmental tips, updates on our campaigns and
festival highlights and much more. We will also have a
section of the Newsletter titled Have Your Say
which means if you would like to share anything in regards
to the environment or mention your eco services to be
placed in the Newsletter, you are welcome to do so.
Please email your
information to

Some ideas on
reducing your waste
Switch from disposable to reusable products: food and
beverage containers, cups, plates, writing pens, razors,
towels, shopping bags, etc. As much as possible to help
create a tree-free home: |
|
|
• |
Replace
paper serviettes with cloth serviettes |
• |
Replace
paper towels with a special set of cloth
towels/napkins - store the used ones in a small
container in your kitchen and just wash and
reuse |
• |
Purchase bleach-free, toilet paper that is made
from the highest post-consumer waste content you
can find (80% minimum) |
• |
If
you print documents, print on once-used paper
and/or bleach-free, recycled paper with the
highest post-consumer waste content available
|
• |
If
you will be doing construction on your house,
search out alternatives to using newly cut wood |
• |
While shopping, if you only buy a few products
skip the shopping bag. For larger purchases,
bring your own |
• |
Avoid products that are packaged for single use
(i.e., drinks, school lunches, confectionary,
cat and dog food, salad mixings, etc.). Instead,
buy in bulk and transfer the products to your
own reusable containers |
• |
Avoid creating rubbish wherever possible: when
ordering food, avoid receiving any unnecessary
plastic utensils, straws, etc |
• |
Instead of buying these items new, save and
reuse all: bags (plastic and paper), rubber
bands, boxes, and packaging material. Buy
products in bulk to save on packaging |
• |
Buy products with the least amount of packaging,
etc. Every little bit of rubbish avoided does make
a difference! |
• |
Try this exercise: Think before
you buy any product - do you really need it? How
did the production of this product impact the
environment and what further impacts will there
be with the disposal of the product (and
associated packaging materials)? |
